"That Government is Best Which Governs Least"
- Henry David Thoreau, Civil Disobedience
Imagine a world with no power lines, no smog, and virtually unlimited safe abundant energy. This isn't a fantasy - it can and should be a reality today. New technology exists which simply is not being used because of bureaucratic road blocks that our very own state and local government have created.
Today's methods of controlling pollution are not working very well. Top-Down mandates from planners, zoners, and utility regulators are constantly at odds with market incentives for innovation in power generation and transportation etc. In Salt Lake, we have a virtual monopoly of power and transportation services! This is NOT the type of environment that lends itself to innovation.
New Technology in power generation is coming so quickly that it is difficult to even know about it, let alone use it! In order to take advantage of these new ideas, we need to change the way we think about power grids, transportation, regulation etc! We need a revolution in how we think about infrastructure!
Local Power Generation Did you know that there is a safe nuclear reactor at the University of Utah that is operated by students? New advances in nuclear power have produced inherently safe power plants with no moving parts that can generate power for over a decade without maintenance. Advances in solar technology have made it much more efficient and less expensive. Local power generation means that power does not need to be sent over long distances, and therefore, does not need to be sent at high voltages and suspended high in the air! In order to most effectively apply these options, zoning and planning must work differently and must be controlled locally. Communities must be empowered to solve these problems where they are, at the community level.
Plan 4 Zero is a paradigm shift, a new way of thinking about markets, innovation, and clean air.
